Why refreshing your curls is important

Refreshing your curls helps to maintain definition, reduces frizz and extends the time between washes. Washing your curls too frequently can strip your hair of its natural oils, leading to dryness and loss of elasticity. By using the right methods and products, you can keep your curls hydrated, vibrant and bouncy without the need for frequent washes.

Five tips to refresh your curls

Discover our favourite tips to revive beautiful, bouncy curls.

1. Start with a light mist spray

Contrary to popular belief, water is your curls’ best friend. Lightly mist your hair with a spray bottle filled with water and a few drops of lightweight or rich oil, depending on your curl type. Hold the bottle about 30cm away from your hair, spritz evenly, and gently scrunch your curls with your fingers to enhance definition. This method helps to distribute a fine mist of water without soaking the hair and reactivates any product applied the day before.

2. Use a leave-in conditioner

A leave-in conditioner can work wonders by adding essential moisture to support individual curls, giving your hair a boost of hydration while keeping frizz at bay. Opt for a leave-in conditioner with nourishing ingredients to help redefine your curls without leaving them stiff or crunchy. If you need to detangle, this is a good time to do so with your fingers, a wide tooth comb or a flexible flat brush until the hair feels smooth. You can then take sections into the palm of your hand and scrunch the hair up gently to reintroduce the curls.

3. Apply a curl styling product

If your curls need extra hold or definition, apply a small amount of curl cream, gel, or mousse. Work the product evenly through your hair, then gently scrunch and twist your curls back into shape. For curls that have lost their form, take small sections and wrap them around your finger to enhance definition—a technique known as finger coiling. This method is particularly effective for looser curls or wavy hair.

4. Use a diffuser

If you're short on time, a diffuser can be a game-changer for speeding up the drying process while boosting volume and curl definition. Always use a low heat setting to protect your curls—patience here pays off! For great root lift, flip your head upside down for extra bounce. A diffuser also helps to minimise frizz by directing airflow to specific areas without disrupting your curl pattern. To lock in definition, dry your hair to about 80% on a warm setting, then switch to a cold setting to seal the cuticle and reduce frizz, leaving your curls smooth and bouncy.

5. Protect your curls overnight

Protecting your curls while you sleep is key to maintaining their shape and reducing frizz, especially for coily hair. Satin and silk should be your must-haves, as their smooth texture reduces friction and prevents breakage. To keep your curls looking their best, swap your pillowcase for a silk one or wrap your hair in a satin turban. This simple step in your night-time routine can make a world of difference, helping your curls stay defined, soft, and frizz-free by morning.
