How to Add Volume to Your Hair

You don’t need to be a hair expert to know that the bouncy blow-dry—all about creating enviable volume and lift—is one of the most raved about hairstyles right now.

In this article, we share our top tips to take your hair to new heights and achieve the incredible volume you’ve been craving!

Five tips for voluminous hair

Discover our favourite ways to achieve beautiful, voluminous hair.

1. Use a volumising shampoo and conditioner

Did you know that the hair products you use in the shower can influence the volume of your hair?

When hunting for a shampoo and conditioner, look for products specifically designed to boost volume, body and thickness. These work by lifting the hair’s cuticle, allowing air into the hair shaft and resulting in fuller-looking hair.

Top Tip: Don’t use conditioner on your roots as this can weigh your hair down and reduce volume—apply to your mid-lengths and ends only.

2. Apply a hair mousse

On the topic of using products to add volume, why not add a hair mousse into your routine?

Hair mousse is not only great for holding and defining curls, but it can also add serious volume. Apply to freshly washed, damp hair before blow-drying to make flat hair appear full, bouncy and voluminous when dry.

3. Use a round brush to blow-dry

Perfect your blow-drying technique in just a few simple steps and create major volume that lasts—all you need is a blow-dryer and a round brush!

  1. Begin by giving your hair a rough dry using your fingers, until it is only slightly damp to the touch.
  2. Once your hair is about 80% dry, divide it into manageable sections, leaving the bottom layer out first.
  3. Starting with the bottom sections and using your round brush, lift your hair at the roots and roll outwards as you reach the ends, making sure you’re drying each section fully as you go.
  4. Repeat the technique throughout the whole head until hair is 100% dry. Leaving any sections slightly damp can lead to frizz, ruining the finished look of your blow-dry.

Tight for time? To quickly add volume at the roots, try roughly blow-drying your hair upside down!

4. Try a volume powder

Whether you’re looking to add maximum volume after blow-drying or need to lift flat roots on the go, volumising hair powder is the perfect tool for adding instant volume to dry hair at any time.

With its lightweight and fine formula, hair powder is suitable for any hair type and length. Simply sprinkle a small amount into your palms or straight onto your roots and use your fingers to distribute evenly.

5. Lock in volume with a hairspray

Hairspray is crucial for locking in all that volume you’ve spent time creating. Give your now bouncy, voluminous locks an even mist of lightweight hairspray to set your style in place.

Opt for a light hold hairspray as this will allow your hair to move freely without being weighed down.
